Europe Direct Information Centre
Central Library, Letterkenny is the Europe Direct Information
Centre for the North West catering for Donegal, Sligo & Leitrim (one of
eight throughout the country). Each Centre provides a range of services,
including an information point providing a range of free publications,
brochures and guides; an on-the-spot question and answer service; computers
with access to the EU’s Europa website; a meeting room capable of hosting
talks, promotional events etc. on European matters; freephone access to the
Europe Direct call centre (in Brussels) in the event of a query having to be
referred to the Commission; and to act as a relay for neighbouring counties.
The project is being co-ordinated by the An Comhairle Leabharlanna/ The Library
Council and funded by the European Commission.
Since the centre’s launch in 2005 we have run a number of
promotional events to highlight the Europe Direct Information Centre and to
encourage debate and discussion on European Union issues. Events have included
multicultural workshops for children/ young adults, exhibitions, storytelling
from Europe, EU quizzes and, to mark the 50th anniversary of the Treaty of Rome
in 2007, children from the local Educate Together primary school took part in a
school project on the countries of the European Union which was exhibited in
the library during March.
If you have a question on the EU, would like to provide
feedback to the European Commission on EU issues or if you would like the
Central Library to host a meeting/presentation on European matters please
contact Maureen or Laura at 074 9124950.
